Island Breeze, a Hawaiian group that shares a taste of island culture through dance, song and inspirational messages, visited Seiberling Elementary School Monday, Jan. 14. The group spoke to students about the power of good character and reinforced the importance of reading. Seiberling chose to focus on Hawaiian themes for its 100 Book Challenge reading program this year. Island Breeze tours worldwide. The group was in the area for its annual trip to Hartville, Ohio. Hosts Howard Miller and Ruby Whittmer, owners of the Hartville Marketplace and Flea Market, hosted the group and helped make the visit to Seiberling possible.

On Thursday, September 22, 2011, thousands of fathers, foster fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, godfathers, cousins, and other significant male caregivers and mentors will walk or drive their children to school to show their support of their children's education. The joint mission of Fame Fathers and the National Fatherhood Initiative is to improve the well-being of children by increasing the proportion of children growing up with involved, responsible and committed fathers.

SPARK Ohio offers direct support to families with three- and four-year-olds so they can be their children's first and best teachers. This free program prepares children for kindergarten at Leggett, Mason, McEbright and Robinson Community Learning Centers, with David Hill CLC being added for the 2011-12 school year. A Parent Partner visits the family, does screening with the child, and provides parents with activity packets that include books and other learning materials that they can use with their three- and four-year-olds. This year, 50 families with four-year-olds participated to get their children ready for kindergarten. On August 11, 2011, recognition of the 2011 class was held at Leggett Community Learning Center for all APS SPARK programs.
