Akron Public Schools recognizes the important role community and parent volunteers play in its students' education. Indeed, it takes many hands to shape a child, and the effect is nowhere as apparent as in the results of the wonderful programs represented this evening. The 14 winners being honored, along with the 28 other nominees, bring to our schools a wealth of knowledge, service and compassion. The Volunteer Recognition Awards, sponsored by the Akron Board of Education and the Business Advisory Council, recognize those who have gone above and beyond in their involvement and contributions. Candidates are nominated by Akron Public Schools personnel in the categories of business, civic organization, individual, PTA and senior citizen. Each person who volunteers his/her time, talent or resources enhances the lives and educations of others. It is no small compliment to be labeled a "volunteer." Without them, the quality of education would diminish.

On Thursday, September 22, 2011, thousands of fathers, foster fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, godfathers, cousins, and other significant male caregivers and mentors will walk or drive their children to school to show their support of their children's education. The joint mission of Fame Fathers and the National Fatherhood Initiative is to improve the well-being of children by increasing the proportion of children growing up with involved, responsible and committed fathers.

Fifty-three teachers were nominated as Building Teachers of the Year. Of those 53, eight were selected as finalists for Teacher of the Year. To showcase why these very special individuals were chosen, this video montage was constructed and was shown during the 2011 Teacher of the Year Banquet on May 24, 2011.
